You may have to affix those 2x4s to the rafters using 3-inch nails if you have a larger hole. Likewise, you can work from the attic to reach the roof rafters. Make sure you’re not missing nails!

Patch a Hole

Measure the hole’s dimensions and cut a piece of plywood that perfectly matches. With gloves on, apply liquid nails to the plywood, putting it into the exposed hole. Then, nail the fresh patch to the framing to cover up the damaged area. It’s easier to patch the hole this way!

Add Tar Paper with Roofing Cement

Use a putty knife with a broad edge to spread the cement across the seams where your fresh plywood connects to the existing wood. Once that’s in place, lay tar paper over the patch. Make sure the roofing tar paper extends beneath those top shingles by roughly 2 inches. Nail it down!

Attach Shingles with Roofing Nails

New shingles should overlap, so you want to start at the bottom and work your way to the top when attaching them. Roof nails are the best choice here. Once the new shingles are connected to the plywood, you cover the nails with cement to prevent leaks!
