The Austin Nature & Science Center opened in 1960 in a deep-eddy bathhouse. The bathhouse was not very attractive to the public, so many activities were held outdoors. However, in 1970, the center relocated to a more appropriate location in Zilker Park. This was done after Friends of Zilker Park appealed to the city council to save the parkland. The Austin Nature & Science Association originally wanted to construct a million-dollar headquarters on the site.
