The city was once an agricultural community with cotton gins, compresses, poultry dressing plants, and peanut shelling plants. In the 1960s, the population of Lockhart County topped 6,000. While the population has grown considerably since then, local residents worried that Lockhart would become a “bedroom community” in the future. To address the concern, they founded the Lockhart Industrial Foundation. Today, the community has several unique businesses, including several art galleries and museums.

The Commerce Gallery opened in Lockhart in 2019. The gallery showcases Texas artists, and also exhibits the work of one out-of-state artist per year. Christopher St. Leger has been exhibiting his artwork at the gallery since the gallery’s opening, but now has his own space. The exhibitions change every other month. Visitors can visit the exhibitions and events listed at The Commerce in the upcoming months. The town is known for its vibrant arts scene, and the downtown blocks have been designated National Historic Landmarks. Next article
