When you think of Austin, Texas, you may think of the famous town of Austin. However, the fact is that there is a much bigger community in Travis County: Garfield. The population of Garfield, Texas, had dwindled to just a few hundred by the late 1800s, and it was as low as twenty by the late 1940s. The county highway map of Garfield, TX, from 1948 shows two churches, a few businesses, and a few scattered homes. Fortunately, the town began to grow again in the 1980s, as developments along the Colorado River began to bring new residents to the area. In 1985, Garfield residents voted to incorporate and avoid annexation with Austin. In 1988, the population was reported to be 745, and by the early 1990s, it had increased to 1,336.
